What is Qurban?

The real purpose of qurban is to attain Allah’s consent and to wish to approach Him. A person who sacrifices an animal approaches Allah and attains His consent through it. Sacrifice is also an example of social assistance and solidarity.

No matter what the fiqh decree about it is, sacrifice has had an important place for centuries in our religious life as a kind of worship that is a symbol and sign of Islamic communities.

When is Qurban Performed?

Qurban is performed during the Season of Haj, which is on the 10, 11, 12 and 13 of Zulhijjah. The first slaughter can be performed after Solat Eiduladha and the last slaughter has to be performed before Maghrib of the last Tashrik day (13 Zulhijjah). This year for Singapore, 10 Zulhijjah falls on 10 July 2022. For other time zones or countries, it may fall on 1 day earlier or later.

What should be the conditions for the animals?

Not all animals are suitable for Qurban and there are rules advised for the health and age of an animal for them to be eligible for sacrifice.

The age of the animal should meet a minimum of:

  • One year in age for sheep and goats (equivalent to one person’s Qurban share)
  • Two years in age for cows and buffalo (equivalent to seven persons’ Qurbani share)
  • Five years in age for camels (equivalent to seven persons’ Qurbani share)
